The series RKD Studies publishes the results of scholarly research on the oeuvre of an artist or on a specific art-historical subject. The subjects relate to Dutch art from the late Middle Ages to the present in an international context.

RKD Studies is a dynamic form of publication: based on the data in the extensive databases of the RKD, it offers the possibility to add new information and to include new insights, as well as to link (digital) sources like archival documents, literature and audiovisual material.

Counting Vermeer features digital-image-processing-based tools developed in the past ten years for scientific examination of paintings on woven fabric. During this decade the use of digital image processing in painting analysis has progressed from a rarity to a pillar of digital art history. Automated thread counters, developed in 2007, provided the foundation for the creation of weave maps that visualize thread density and thread angle patterns. This book is the first to describe the impact of the use of these new tools in the analysis of the complete oeuvre of a renowned Old Master painter, in this case the 34 paintings on canvas by Johannes Vermeer. A significant benefit of the use of weave maps is their assistance in ascertaining whether canvas supports of separate paintings were taken from the same bolt of canvas. Consequently, weave maps are an extremely useful tool for assessing questions of dating, pendant relationships, and authenticity. Counting Vermeer demonstrates the ways in which the study of weave maps has helped inform our understanding of a number of paintings by Vermeer.

In 2013 the RKD initiated a research programme under the banner of Gerson Digital. The starting point for this project is the influential publication by Horst Gerson (1907-1978), Ausbreitung und Nachwirkung der holländischen Malerei des 17. Jahrhunderts (1942), which considers the dispersal and reception of Dutch painting in other countries. Gerson Digital : Germany is a translated, illustrated and annotated chapter of Gerson’s survey, on cultural exchange between the Netherlands and Germany (p. 197-299). This is the third publication in the Gerson Digital series. The first, concerning Poland, was published in 2013 and was supplemented by two additional articles in August 2014. The second publication, concerning Denmark, was released in 2015.
